    Regarding Horses

  • Back In the Saddle Post-Partum

    Jackie
    10 May 2012 | 12:00 pm
It seems like just yesterday – and yet a lifetime ago at the same time – that I was lamenting the many months since I’d been able to ride a horse to protect my pregnancy. Back in the middle of March, T minus 6 weeks to due date, I was starting to wonder how long it would take me to recover enough after giving birth to get back in the saddle. I’ll admit that I was a little discouraged by all the commenters who relayed that it took them months before they rode again. The final verdict for Ace and I? Exactly three weeks. This past Monday, May 7, I climbed aboard Ace for…

    2 May 2012 | 10:58 am
I’m a fan of thoroughbreds, a fan of major equine events that draw public attention, and a fan of watching these magnificent animals do what they love. Each year, the Kentucky Derby is the trifecta of all three. I love the horses, the silks, the singing of My Old Kentucky Home, the dresses, the hats, the ponies, and the mint juleps (which I’ve never had, but perhaps should try making this year!). And it’s always more fun when I know a little bit about the horses entered in the big race. As the average horse enthusiast, I like to look for trainers I like, the prettiest…

    29 Apr 2012 | 12:59 pm
Big brother Ace and I are very pleased to introduce the new 2-legged baby in our family: Isaac Paul. Isaac was born on Monday, April 16 at 2:00 in the afternoon. He was 19.5 inches long and 6 Ibs 12 oz. Labor and delivery went as well as it could (serious ouch!) and both Isaac and I came through in good health. He did develop a bad case of jaundice and had to go back to the hospital for 24-hours, but fortunately that is super treatable and he’s doing fine now. I am recovering very quickly and feel pretty much back to normal other than some healing left from a small episiotomy –…

It a sunny morning to kick-off opening Thursday at Equine Affaire Ohio, and for the first time in years I’m sitting on my couch at work instead of in the bleachers in Voinovich to watch a clinic after an early morning commute from Canton to Columbus. But as much as I adore Equine Affaire, somehow waddling around the Ohio State Expo Center two weeks before my due date and two hours away from my husband and hospital didn’t seem like a great idea. So here I am sitting at home, hoping that all of you are enjoying my favorite equestrian event for me. After several years of attending…

It has now been 22 weeks and 1 day since I’ve been on the back of a horse. That’s either just about 5 months or 155 days – whichever sounds more torturous. But tomorrow baby boy and I hit the 34th week of pregnancy, which puts our April 28 due date just 6 weeks away – if we make it that long. Suddenly, not riding seems much more manageable with the bulk of the time behind me. It’s a good thing too – with the early spring weather, removal of the winter blankets, and green grass starting to poke through – I don’t think I could handle being…

"The greatest good you can do for another is not just to share your riches but to reveal to him his own."-Benjamin Disraeli When Marsha Williams was a child, she discovered an Arabian horse inside a general reference book she had found in the library. Her heart pounded in her ears, when she saw him. There was just something about the photo that captured her attention. She can still remember tracing the horse's silhouette, over and over with her finger. She never tired of it and promised herself that one day, she would have a horse like this. Horses had always defined who she was, who she…

Kings of Colorado by David E. Hilton is similar to the Louis Sachar novel, Holes. Both are about a boy’s detention center run by cruel staff with ulterior motives. The difference is that Holes takes place in Texas where the boys are made to dig holes, while Kings is set on a Colorado ranch and the chores are taking care of and training mustangs. For most of the book, William Sheppard is reminiscing about his two years at the Swope Ranch Boys’ Reformatory – what brought him there at 13 years old, the friends and enemies he made and the horses he worked with.      Part 1 As I laid there with my face cradled in my arms on top of the picnic table the depth of my exhaustion really caught up with my brain. No minute rest or even five minute power nap was going to fix this. If I was going to get my horse back to his stall it was going to have to happen immediately. I was really wishing I hadn't sent Dave away. My other mistake was I was out there without my cell phone. To get help I would have to put my horse in jeopardy, either turning him loose where he could get to the stallions in their stalls or tying him someplace not intended for such purpose.

I was heartbroken every time I looked at the big trunk with the little tree twisted and broken underneath it, and I kept asking my husband if we could buy a new dogwood tree once we had the carcass of the downed tree removed. As the warm weather surprised us earlier than usual, I also noticed that the dogwood branches were sprouting little green…

HAPPY EASTER!“The peace that we are looking for is not peace that crumbles as soon as there is difficulty or chaos. Whether we’re seeking inner peace or global peace or a combination of the two, the way to experience it is to build on the foundation of unconditional openness to all that arises. Peace isn’t an experience free of challenges, free of rough and smooth—it’s an experience that’s expansive enough to include all that arises without feeling threatened.”Pema ChodronPEACE AND LOVE TO ALL OF YOU!

  • Horse Quiz of the Week: Saddle Fit Quiz

    10 May 2012 | 3:47 am
Saddle fitting can be difficult, but it's worth taking the time to make sure you've found the best fitting saddle for you and your horse. Even though my saddle fit Trillium well, the padding inside had shifted, forming hard lumps. After the saddle had been adjusted, little problems like being unwilling to travel in frame for anything but a short time, or refusing to do a rein back were almost instantly solved. Now because her muscles have changed again, I need to have the saddle adjusted to fit her  new shape. But I've learned that it is money well spent....Read Full Post

Back pain in horses can be a serious problem, causing poor and reduced performance, grumpiness and bad behaviour, not to mention unnecessary discomfort for the horse. It is no secret that one of the most common causes of back pain is an ill-fitting saddle and whilst regular visits from the saddler should alleviate most major issues, horses in work are constantly changing shape, so maintaining a “perfect fit” in between visits can be tricky. In reality, getting a saddle checked every few weeks is not an option, and particularly with ever-changing young horses, and those who are gaining or…

According to the University of California Davis Center for Equine Health, the incidence of colic in horses (in North America) is highest in June and September. The risk of colic is increased by dramatic changes in temperature relative to how much or how little water is consumed. You can decrease this risk by ensuring that your horses have access to shade, observing your horses carefully every day and providing large quantities of fresh, cool water. Horses will drink between 8 and 10 gallons per day. And pay particular attention during times when there are very high peaks in temperature. I…

I received a call yesterday evening, from a woman inquiring about a horse. She seemed to be in a hurry to get every bit of information but was also very displeased with every piece of information given. She was inquiring about a horse that in no way suited what she wanted, still she persisted in demanding answers. What stood out to me was a question about whether his tendency was to buck or rear under saddle because, as she put it, every horse has a tendency to misbehave one way or the other. To be more specific, was his natural tendency to rear or buck under saddle when he doesn’t want…

It can be intoxicating.  I know it all too well from my lifetime of showing.  Yet, I can no longer support, knowing what I do, anything that puts a horse’s life or welfare in jeopardy.  I philosophize that just because a horse can do something we ask of it, do we have that right? This brings me to that word ‘commitment.’ I ask each of my students and clinicians to tell me their commitment around their…

This last weekend I had the pleasure of spending four hustling and bustling days at the Midwest Horse Fair in Madison, Wisconsin. What a difference a new court can make! A little over a year ago, a trial court in Connecticut dismissed a personal injury lawsuit brought by the parents of a young boy who was bitten on the cheek by a horse named Scuppy. The family had been visiting Glendale Farms, a dual-purpose business where flowers, vegetables and other plants were sold and where horses were boarded. Visiting the horses apparently was a popular pastime for customers at Glendale, and the child was bitten after the family walked over to Scuppy’s paddock and started petting the horse. The farm owners argued that they had…

Horse rescues, in the tradition of Blanche DuBois, more often than not depend on the kindness of strangers to keep their stalls and paddocks open. Donations are the lifeblood of rescues and, sometimes quite literally, of the horses in their care. It’s a complicated relationship, the one between donor and recipient. It’s a relationship built mainly on trust: for the rescues, trust that money and support will be there when it’s needed; for the donors, trust that the money will be put to the best use possible. Most rescues do an amazing job with far fewer resources than they really need,…

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about the workings of Kentucky’s equine activity law. This is how a somewhat similar equine-related personal injury claim was handled in England. Nadine Turnbull was exercising "Gem," a 7-year-old Arabian gelding owned by a friend, when the horse suddenly bolted, ran across a field, and dashed through a gap in a hedge. Gem then tossed Turnbull onto a paved highway and she suffered a serious head injury in the fall. She filed a personal injury lawsuit against Gem’s owner, Rebecca Warrener, seeking damages for chronic migraine headaches and other problems…
  • Ethical Dilemma

    17 Apr 2012 | 7:17 am
It’s an ethical question, not a legal one, and I want your opinion. What do the Grand National Steeplechase and a weekly New York Times column on ethics have to do with each other? And why should we care? Confused? The 125th Grand National was run over four-and-a-half miles and 30 monstrous fences at Aintree Racecourse near Liverpool, England, on Saturday. Forty horses faced the starter; only 15 managed to finish the grueling race. Two horses, including this year’s Cheltenham Gold Cup winner and early Grand National favorite Synchronised, were euthanized after falls. Those deaths brought…

Seider also talks about how different factors, such as the quality of the hoof and the horse’s use effect the hoof care needs.

  • Special horses can make you cry

Sweet, little Redford This past month has been heart-wrenching. Days have been marred with a constant struggle treating symptoms without a known cause to try to help dear, sweet Redford recover. This takes its toll – on both you and the horse. The time and angst involved in playing the guessing the game without uncovering an answer can be all-consuming – and devastating. Redford, a 14.2hh, three-year-old Thoroughbred gelding has served as my buddy, a source of inspiration and on-the-ready helper for so many different farm tasks. He began this ordeal with what is commonly called colitis,…

  • Alpha horses make you laugh when you reach them

    Nanette Levin
    24 Apr 2012 | 5:00 am
Everything you do with an alpha horse counts. If you think they’re not watching and reading you every moment you’re with them, you’re probably experiencing some predicaments. Just because they seem like they’re not paying attention doesn’t mean it’s so – instead, they’re probably chuckling about what you think they’re not noticing. Try to dominate these gals (and guys) without an ear and eye toward their communicated needs, and they’ll give you a schooling you won’t soon forget. In the truly sad cases of dominance and violence, some will give up and yield, but lose the…

Mary Ann Simonds is an incredible woman who managed to merge her uncanny connection with horses with scholarly scientific pursuits long before any 4-year college or graduate studies programs offered an equine focus (she invented her degree focus just about every time she earned a new one). She’s an inspiring, delightful and internationally celebrated contributor to the Inventing Your Horse Career series who understands equine industry issues more than most. Her story is fascinating – as are her lauded accomplishments. Learn more about what she’s doing today at her website. As a…
  • Young horse training behaviorial problems – sometimes it’s about pain

Stefanie Reinhold offered a wonderful article recently on her a Horse Wellness site that included nine short video tutorials (actually ten videos, with the last one more of a promotional message, but fun to watch). These videos were culled from YouTube material posted by Jochen Schleese  of Schleese Saddlery Service, who is also a former Olympic Rider, Certified Master Saddler and faculty member of the German National Riding School. Here’s a sample (the first lesson) of the spotlight. It occurred to me, as I watched each one, how many young horse training issues could be resolved with…

The ISH cross is referred to as the Irish Draught Sport Horse in North America and the Irish Sport Horse in Europe.  The difference in names come about because the Irish Draught Sport Horse…
